THE BIG JIG TABLE
July 15-16, 2017: I started thinking ahead and decided I needed to get a big jig table built for the construction of the wings, fuselage, and tail feathers. I bought 4- 11 7/8″ x 16′ wood I joists from a lumber supplier. They are a little longer than 16′ which worked out well with the Melamine sheets. The Melamine is sold in 49″ x 97″ dimensions for some reason. 1″ bigger on two sides than the typical 4’x8′ ply sheets. I like working on the Melamine. Nice and bright. You can also do layout with lead pencils and erase with a rubber eraser if you need to. There will probably be some of that in the future.
I also found some leg levelers at Rockler. Similar to what you have on the bottom of a washing machine, only much bigger. The levelers will allow me to get the table top perfectly level and will be great for laying up the wing in the future. A lot of work but I am going to love having that big, white, shiny, level table for the next year or two.
